Chashaku - Bamboo Matcha Scoop
The chashaku is the bamboo scoop used to measure matcha into the chawan. Its form became established in Japan during the development of wabicha in the sixteenth century, when tea masters began treating even the simplest utensils as objects worthy of close attention.
Traditionally carved from a single piece of bamboo, each chashaku is shaped around the character of the material, its grain, node, curve and natural irregularities. Many were given names and made for particular masters, occasions or bowls, turning a humble measuring scoop into a highly personal piece of tea history.
