Snow Dove Chawan 

A traditional Mino-yaki matcha bowl, traditionally known as a chawan, featuring the distinctive Kairagi Oribe glaze, known for its textured, crackled surface and green hues.

The chawan is the defining vessel of matcha. Its history within chanoyu reaches from imported Chinese tenmoku bowls, prized in Japan from the twelfth century, to Korean forms and the deliberately austere ceramics developed in Japan during the sixteenth century. The tea masters of the Momoyama period transformed the status of the bowl: under Sen no Rikyū, irregularity, rough surfaces and restrained form became deliberate aesthetic choices rather than flaws. Raku ware emerged from this culture, with Chōjirō producing hand-formed bowls associated with Rikyū’s wabi-cha.

The chawan is conceived as an object of connoisseurship. The foot, rim, profile, clay, glaze and traces of firing are all considered; the bowl is examined in the hand and in relation to the tea it contains. Raku bowls, in particular, were formed by hand rather than thrown on a wheel, placing the maker’s gesture directly into the finished object. Over centuries, individual bowls acquired names, histories and lineages, and some became celebrated works of art in their own right.
